U12 JUNIORS VICTORIOUS AT THE NURSING CUP FINAL

The Junior Nursing Cup is an invitational competition inviting the best teams from Coventry and Warwickshire to compete for honours in a high prestige tournament backed by E-ON and the Co-operative Society. Friday 17th May saw two of the finest U12 teams in the area, Coventry Jaguar and Leamington Hibernian, compete for the accolade of Champions in front of 3000 spectators at Coventy City's Ricoh Arena.
Following presentation of the two teams to Sir Jack Charlton, the two sides locked horns for the third time this season with Jag hoping to repeat the victories secured in their earlier league encounters. It was Jag who started the brightest of the two teams as Hibs, appearing a little over awed by the occasion, struggled to gain a sense of rythm and the surging runs of Jags Abdul Aziz Mohammed. On twenty minutes a throughball down the centre awarded Hibs a chance from range that Gellender converted with a confident strike over the Jag keeper from the edge of the box. Nerves settled, Hibs set about to battle in the midfield and a period of even play saw opportunities go begging at both ends. On the half hour, in an attack similar to that which delivered their first goal, Gellender turned on a half chance and struck an impressive volley beyond the keeper, again from distance to send Hibs into half time 2-0 up.
The second half saw Hibs continue to threaten the Jag goal supported by a solid back row performance. Gellender squandered a relatively straightforward one v one with the keeper to be denied his hat-trick but shortly after White's excellent work down the wing finally bore fruit as he undid the flank and delivered a deft low ball across the six yard box for Hibs Si-Yaun Lau to convert from close range. With the game seemingly one, Hibs sat back and could easily have been punished as Jag dug deep and came on the offensive. Inevitably Jag broke through to pull one back but some stout defending and confident keeping maintained Hibs advantage through to the final whistle. The match was followed by a pitch presentation involving all this seasons winners and an after match dinner attended by local councillors and Sir Jack Charlton. A footballing experience a particular group of young boys and their supporters will surely never forget, least of all Hibs proud captain Lambert and man of the match Gellender.
